It is commonly believed that shutters were first used in ancient Greece in order to provide light control, ventilation and protection in that tropical enviroment. Those first shutters were likely constructed with fixed louvers made out of marble. Eventually the concept of shutters spread throughout the mediterranean and wood replaced marble as a more suitable material for production.
As the Spanish started colonizing in the Americas, they brought shutters to the New World. Decadent mansions in the south used shutters, and the term "Plantation Shutters" is derived from this area. The name plantation is believed to relate to the cotton plantations that would generally incorporate a large mansion where the plantation owner would live, so when the shutters were installed they became known as plantation shutters and the name was born.
Since those early days shutters have come a long way and now as mentioned previously are more like a piece of fine furniture.
